When I started mail forwarding business in California. Some people and friends asked me if they could use our address for their existing or new business. Yes definitely, my company Mail on Screen provides the virtual addresses for both individual and business customers. However, most businesses need also a service commonly know as California Registered Agent.

The official used name by the state of California is Agent for Service of Process.

Sometimes you can see other names:

  • California statutory agent
  • California Corporate Agent
  • California Resident Agent.

It makes sense if any corporation needs a business address and mail forwarding service in California, the business will most likely need also California Registered Agent. What is Registered Agent in California?

California registered agent is required by the state of California and it represents your business for any contact by the state or government. Let’s show a little example: The state wants to send you some important mail and it is the registered agent’s responsibility to receive the mail on behalf of your business and inform you as soon as possible.

Who need California Registered Agent?

Who can be California Registered Agent?

Any individual resident in California for example you, your family member, or a friend with a physical street address in California (not PO.BOX). The registered agent must be available during ‘‘normal‘‘ business hours from Monday through Friday.

Or

Domestic or foreign company registered as an official agent for service of process with the same requirements as an individual registered agent (physical street address and availability from Monday through Friday).

There is a common question if you can be your own agent for the service of process in California. For sure, any resident of California with a real street address can be. However before you become one, you should consider advantages and disadvantages. The probably biggest plus is fact that you will save some money each year. On the other hand, you have to be available at that address from Monday through Friday during normal business hours. You must be also willing to lose your home address private because the address of registered agent is public.
